In the 1950s, pioneer and company founder Cecily Sostek began a professional nurse service to help mothers care for their newborn infants. Although we take it for granted today, a company owned and operated by a woman was a huge achievement in 1955. Cecily’s service was well-received and she earned a loyal following. She was on a first name basis with hundreds of her customers and frequently ran into them over the years while shopping at the Star Market in Newton or at Filene's Basement.
Many of Cecily's relatives frequently expressed their frustration, because after they would be introduced at a party or gathering they got the same old question: "Did you say your last name was Sostek? Are you related to Cecily??" After having endured this annoying ritual for many years, Cecily's relatives finally began to appreciate just how loved and respected she was in the community. They gained a new found respect for the outstanding service that Cecily had been running for all those years.
Many customers, who had benefited from Cecily’s services when their children were born, also called upon her again years later for help in caring for their aging parents. customers would often ask, "Could you send someone to help with my parents just like the wonderful lady you sent us years ago to help with our baby?" Cecily was very proud that her long-standing reputation for high quality caregivers gave people the confidence to call her for help with other members of their family, thus spawning the next chapter of Cecily's company: senior care services.
Frequently Cecily would say with a tongue and cheek delivery... "we now can help you from cradle to grave." When her son first joined the business in 1983 he requested his mother consider using an alternate phrase. He wasn't successful, but at least he learned who was the boss! Cecily and her son Donald enjoyed working together for the next 12 years until she retired after running her company for almost 40 years. At her retirement party she told her son she never wanted her company to be the biggest.... just the best!
Sadly, Cecily passed away on the 55th anniversary of the founding of the company. She leaves a legacy of quality, compassion and excellence, and a following of over ten thousand satisfied customers... and growing!
